ASEAN journalists to meet in Bangkok to face new challenges
Journalists from ASEAN countries will meet in Bangkok later this week to discuss enhancing cooperation to cope with challenges posed by the fast-changing media landscapes.
Thepchai Yong, president of the Confederation of Thai Journalists (CTJ), said the media play a very important in creating better understanding and bridging the diversity among member countries of the ASEAN Community.
The journalists will be in Bangkok for the 19th General Assembly of the Confederation of ASEAN Journalists (CAJ), one of the oldest and most active regional media organizations. CAJ was founded in 1975 to forge cooperation among media practitioners in the region. CTJ, an umbrella organization of Thai media associations, will host the assembly.
Industry Minister Dr. Uttama Savayana will address the assembly on January 26 at the Emerald Hotel on how the media need to adjust themselves to cope with the digital challenges in the so-called the Age of 4.0.
“The assembly will be an important occasion for CAJ to re-emphasize its objective of promoting a healthy, free and responsible press as being crucial to national development” said Thepchai.
At the assembly, Cambodia will officially become the latest member of CAJ while Myanmar will attend as observer. “So we can say that the spirit of ASEAN will be in full display at the 19th General Assembly, “said Mr Thepchai, adding that Thailand will take over the presidency of CAJ from Vietnam at the assembly.
The ASEAN delegates will also pay a courtesy call on Deputy Prime Minister Wisanu Krue-ngam at the Government House on January 25.
Thepchai said the assembly is fully supported by several government and private organizations.
