The Thai Journalists Association organized the “Safety training” for the 10th consecutive year, elevating professional ethics in reporting the conflict-disaster incidents with a hope to minimize the problems of ‘hate speech’ and ‘fake news’ in the society.
About 28 journalists working in newspapers, radio, television, and online media participated in this training on 20-23 June 2019 in Nakhon Nayok Province.
The training covered how to manage risk in conflict and disaster areas, language usage and reporting in conflict situations, conflict structures, practicing making safe water news, and lifesaving and tactical first aid etc.
Mongkol Bangprapha, TJA President, presided over the closing ceremony and emphasized that the main purpose of the training was to support journalists to be able to work even in severe situations and maintain professional ethics.
They should not be used as a tool of any conflict groups. TJA will continue support this kind of project every year.
"This training, held for the 10th consecutive year, is considered one of the most important training programs of TJA because it gives more knowledge to journalists to cover news outside the office. This training will help them to be able to work even in severe situations and to maintain media ethics.
“The journalists must be safe to work under extreme conditions. The media must not be a person who extends the conflict. Do not report hate speech but must act as a Gate Keeper to scrutinize all information to solve the rumors, catchy news as well,’’ said Mr Mongkol.
Sathaporn Phongphipatwattana, project manager and team leader of the training, stated that this program in conflict and disaster situations was a practical training program along with the lecture, as it required the participants to have the opportunity to practice in virtual events so that if a violent conflict or real disaster occurs, it can be treated as if practiced.
“Since the main purpose of the training is to require the participants to apply the knowledge gained in the news reporting to get more in-depth news. The journalists must not hinder the operations of authorities when a disaster occurs,’’ he said.
This workshop began since 2010 when Thailand’s years-long political conflicts started. Journalists were seen as part of the conflicts despite that previously they were only a group to report news.
In the beginning, foreign journalists were invited to share their experiences in conflict-related news reporting and train Thai journalists. As the political situation in the country had advanced, those who were trained in the first group turned themselves to be the trainers and increased the training courses on news reporting in the disaster and water rescue areas.
The training program was made possible by the support and partnership of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC), National Institute for Emergency Medicine (NIEM), Thai Media Fund, National Union of Journalists, Thailand, Doi Kham Food Products Company Limited, Trend VG 3 Company Limited or Thai Rath Online, PPTV Television Station, Voluntary rescue volunteers and "Noen Hom Watershed Management Unit", Nakhon Nayok Province.
